Freedom's Frontier Heritage Traveler

Get Ready to Celebrate with Us in 2016

DSC_0022The Board of Trustees, staff and partners of Freedom’s Frontier have been working hard to make 2016 a special year for the heritage area. We are embarking on several special programs to celebrate our 10th anniversary. We invite you to join in our celebration!

Freedom’s Frontier Signature Events

Throughout 2016, Freedom’s Frontier will partner with museums, historic sites and organizations in the heritage area to help host Freedom’s Frontier Signature Events. These events are an opportunity to learn more about our history and our work in the heritage area. We are kicking off our 10th anniversary at our 3rd Annual Awards Luncheon at the Olathe Community Center on October 22. Other events range from Lee’s Summit’s “Fair to Remember” celebrating Missouri’s history in May to a Kansas birthday celebration at the Johnson County, Kansas, Library in January. We will be celebrating at Poplar Heights Living History Farm in Butler, Missouri, as well as commemorating 1856 in Douglas County, Kansas. Be sure to check our website in 2016 to check out our signature events as well as all the special historically-themed programming happening in Freedom’s Frontier.

10th Anniversary Photo Contest

From the cities of St. Joseph, Gladstone, Manhattan, and Fort Scott to the back country roads in Ray, Vernon, Montgomery, and Jefferson counties, we want to show off your images! Freedom’s Frontier is expanding our annual photo contest to include four separate categories. So grab your camera, explore the heritage area and hit us with your best shot. Winners will be selected in each of four categories, Events & People, Historic Sites, Nature/Trails and our historic themes (Shaping the Frontier, Missouri/Kansas Border War, Enduring Struggle for Freedom). Winners will be featured in our 2017 Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area calendar. Anyone is welcome to submit a picture so long as that picture was taken in the heritage area. Check for details.

Shared Stories in Our Schools

The history of Freedom’s Frontier doesn’t stop at a state border. Our history crosses boundaries and involves multiple perspectives of different events. What better way for kids to connect to and think about the history of Freedom’s Frontier than through the words of the people who lived it? In 2011 for the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, Kansas Humanities Council, with support from Freedom’s Frontier created a series of readers’ theater scripts that use letters, newspaper articles and diary entries to look at different topics about the Civil War in Missouri and Kansas from multiple perspectives. These scripts are available on our website to anyone who wishes to read them or use them in programming. For our 10th anniversary, we are making the scripts available to teachers and asking them to share with us how they used the Shared Stories readers’ theater scripts in their classroom. The teachers who shares the best idea for how they used the script will receive a $1,500 grant for their classroom.

Freedom’s Frontier Discovery Journals

No matter if you want to explore the heritage area on the road or from the comfort of your own computer, the Freedom’s Frontier Discovery Journal will help children learn about our history and find places to discover more about Freedom’s Frontier. Due out in spring 2016, Freedom’s Frontier plans to distribute the Discovery Journals to fourth grade classrooms throughout the heritage area. These journals will include information about the shared history of Freedom’s Frontier, activities, and suggestions of historic sites and museums for kids to visit with their friends and families.

10th Anniversary Campaign

As we plan for the future of Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area, we are working to develop a sustainable source of funding. We invite people to consider becoming a Heritage Traveler Insider. Your tax-deductible donation to Freedom’s Frontier enrolls you as a Heritage Traveler Insider. Our insiders received a monthly email that highlights our partner museums and historic sites and provides insider information and suggestions about where to visit as you explore Freedom’s Frontier. Insiders also receive special coupons, discounts and invitations to events taking place in the heritage area.

We invite you to celebrate 10 years of Freedom’s Frontier with us!
