In order to better fulfill the mission of the National Park Service, the NPS has developed a “Sister Park” Initiative. Several NPS sites have developed relationships with national parks in other countries to increase information sharing and address common issues.

The National Park Service also participates in the World Heritage Sites program. According to the National Park Service’s website, World Heritage Sites are “outstanding universally recognized natural and cultural features that attract admiration and merit in the protection of all people worldwide.”

Some heritage areas also develop sister-relationships internationally, as well. The South Carolina National Heritage Corridor has worked for several years to establish and interpret their historical connection with Barbados through the Carolina-Barbados Connection.
