The National Park Service and National Heritage Areas make a powerful team when it comes to working with communities. From generating economic activity for park gateway communities to providing grants for preservation and outdoor recreation to listing historic properties on the National Register of Historic Places, the National Park Service works hard to transform communities. National Heritage Areas take this concept one stap further as a cost-effective way of telling America’s story and conserving natural and hsitoric resources. National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis notes that heritage area are a vital part of the NPS mission and are “places where small investments pay huge dividends.” According to a 2012 study, the collective economic impact of our 49 National Heritage Areas is estimated to be $12.9 billion annually, supporting 148,000 jobs and generaging $1.2 billion in Federal revenue.
