Be an Urban Hiker

Hiking in the Parkville Nature Sanctuary.

A winter hike in the Parkville Nature Sanctuary.

As a resident of Northland Kansas City, my family’s favorite trails are close by. Whether we are strolling the paved paths along Line Creek and through Happy Rock Park or we are tromping through the woods at the Parkville Nature Sanctuary, we connect with one another and with nature.

From Manhattan to Topeka  to metro KC  to St. Joseph, urban trails provide an oasis from the city without leaving town. If a destination hike is in order, we like to head to a state park in Missouri and Kansas or to the Flint Hills.

Consider a 10th anniversary challenge to walk 100 miles on Freedom’s Frontier’s urban trails!

Want to explore urban trails in other National Heritage Areas? Check out Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area in Pennsylvania or Augusta Canal National Heritage Area in Georgia.

Don’t forget to tell us where your favorite place to take a hike in the city is in Freedom’s Frontier!
