Twenty-six years ago, Milferd Penner and his daughter, Marci, hosted a party on their farm near Inman, Kansas, to celebrate their book Kansas Weekend Guide. They invited communities from across Kansas to attend and showcase what was special about their part of Kansas. The Kansas Sampler Festival grew out of that event.
Nine communities, in addition to the Penner farm in Inman, have hosted Kansas Sampler Festival, including Ottawa, Independence and Wamego. The entertaining event features all that Kansas has to offer. More than 150 Kansas communities showcase their historic sties, unique events, local eateries and specialty shops. It is truly a great way to “sample the best of Kansas.”
This year, Wamego, Kansas, will play host to Kansas Sampler Festival on May 2-3. The wonderful venue in Wamego City Park provides a perfect setting to learn what to see, do, hear, taste, buy and learn from around Kansas. Freedom’s Frontier will be set up with a stage that features our shared history and partners under our tent to entice people to visit the sites where our history was made.
Kansas Sampler Festival is a project of the Kansas Sampler Foundation, which believes that one way to preserve and sustain rural culture is to educate the public about what there is to see and do in Kansas and to nurture difference-making relationships between communities and the public.
